Freedom Coaches
The Freedom's coaches bring with them not only a tremendous mix and wealth of soccer
knowledge but also many years of experience as coaches, teachers, mentors and parents
of young children. We strive to cultivate a player-centered learning environment that is:
- developmentally appropriate
- encourages self discovery and creativity
- provides positive feedback and encouragement
- focuses on long-term individual player development
The combination of these factors shapes our coaching approach and philosophy,
with the goal of providing players with a positive environment in which they can
develop their proficiency in the game towards lasting success and a life-long love for soccer.

Gus began playing soccer professionally at the age of 15 and quickly rose to the top ranks
of South American soccer. He played on top-rated first division teams in Brazil and Argentina and
consistently one of the top scores in league and tournament play. In addition, he played for Argentina's National
Indoor Team and Brazil's National Beach Soccer Team.
Locally, Gus has served as the head coach for the Northern Regional Olympic Development Program (ODP)
Boys U-19 team.
He has coached several NCSL teams and WAGS teams in addition to training various
select and travel teams… to include 10-State Cup Final Four, 4-State Cup and 3-Region I championships).
- In 2004/2005 Gus also served as a coach for the Super Y League (SYL) Boys U-14.
- In 2007 one of his U16 players was asked to join the U-17 national Men's team as their center back.
This is an elite group of 40 players was groomed to participate in the U17 2007 World Cup and was sponsored
entirely by US Soccer and Nike. Congratulations to Gus and Soccer the Brazilian Way to place one of our
players from VA in this program.
- In 2007, three of Gus’ U17 boys were selected to the 2007 National ODP.
Gus’ current U15 Girls D1 WAGSL team accomplishments include 2007 VYSA State Cup and Region I
titles and attained National #1 ranking in GotSoccer.com, were champions in 2009 and finalists in 2010 at the
prestigious Disney Showcase tournament and in 2009/2010 was selected to participate in the US Youth Soccer
National League (U15 Girls). The USYS National League is an extension of the highly successful US Youth Soccer
Regional Leagues (US Youth Soccer Region I Premier League, Midwest Regional League, Region III Premier League
and Far West Regional League). The National League provides an avenue for teams to play in meaningful matches
against top competition from across the country for continued development and opportunities for exposure at
the next level. In addition to recruiting opportunities, National League teams compete for the league title
and two slots to the annual US Youth Soccer National Championships.
In addition to Gus’ training efforts with the ASC Freedom during the 2009/2010 season,
his U13 Girls team has also qualified for the VYSA State Cup Final Four in Richmond.
